Your Summer Home

SALEM ACADEMY AND COLLEGE Founded four years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Salem Academy and College began instruction in April 1772. Despite such travails as the Civil War and a measles epidemic, the institution never closed its doors in the more than two hundred years since those first classes were held.

Today, the school continues its tradition of academic rigor. The modern, self-contained campus, situated adjacent to historic Old Salem, provides an idyllic backdrop for the summer. In addition to the academic and social field trips, students have many opportunities to visit Winston-Salem with their friends and teachers for performances or shopping.

One of the many conveniences of the Spotlight program is that the classes, residence halls and dining hall are all connected in one facility. The Academy building has a gym, auditorium, sun porch, and lounges. Spotlight staff live on each residence floor, and Public Safety patrols the campus and buildings 24-hours a day to ensure a secure environment for all students.

Students live in newly remodeled McMichael and Hodges Halls, which are both air-conditioned. Each single or double room shares a bathroom with one other adjoining room. This living and residential experience provides a wonderful opportunity for girls to sample college or boarding school life.

Classes are held in air-conditioned Critz Hall. Academic activities and explorations, however, often take place outside of the classroom! Teachers and students frequently use the campus grounds and other buildings, or even visit downtown Winston-Salem to take learning beyond the classroom.
