Student surveys show that residential life is a favorite aspect of the Spotlight experience. The community the girls and teachers create is the hallmark of our program.

Friendships that begin here are cherished throughout the summer and beyond. Most girls arrive on the first Sunday without knowing anyone, but by the time parents return two weeks later, the girls find themselves waiting for the last round of hugs and trading e-mail addresses and phone numbers.

Our students come from nearby and across the country for our unique Spotlight experience. We create an environment in which self-expression and open-mindedness are celebrated. Your online student profile is the tool our staff uses to pair roommates. Each girl is matched with a roommate of similar age and interests, but attending a different academic track. Students learn a great amount about living in a community and expressing themselves while supporting each other.

Spotlight teachers are largely young professionals or graduate students earning advanced degrees. Many have experience working specifically with young women, and all are passionate about their role as teachers and mentors to our students. Our Resident Advisors (RAs) are often college students and Salem alumnae. Helping our students with everything from homesickness to the nuances of Ultimate Frisbee to skits for a talent show, our Resident Advisors offer mentorship, guidance and tons of fun.

Our program director oversees all aspects of the program – ensuring that the students are well engaged in their classes and activities, growing both academically and socially, staying safe and having fun. The academic director supports students and staff in their coursework, and the director of residential life oversees the activities and residential experience of the students. All directors live in the residence halls and are always available to students and parents.
