Our Writers’ Workshop guides students in expressing their opinions and ideas with words and
weaving compelling narratives. By improving their written voice, students enhance their ability to
communicate with the world.
In our workshop, students learn how to turn an original idea into a piece of writing and how to bring
imagination and structure to a story. They explore outline, plot, setting, character, word choice, revision,
and editing. Our mechanics review covers point-of-view, sentence structure, verb forms, tense agreement,
punctuation, and grammar. Through specific assignments, students work on the critical tools of observation
and journaling – essential resources for ideas, inspiration, and narrative details.
This is truly a workshop environment; students read and comment on each other’s work while learning how to
polish their own writing and accept constructive criticism. The Spotlight writing program gives students the tools
and confidence to make writing an enjoyable and valuable part of their lives.
