Fashion Design is an exciting, fast-paced
field in which some of America's most
talented artists are working. Our
experienced instructors show students how
fashion design makes use of a great deal of
academic knowledge, as well as creativity
and attention to detail. They present
scholarly material in a creative, hands-on
environment, and introduce girls to this
amazing field of study. No previous design
or drawing experience is required, just
eagerness to learn and the desire to create.

Students considering Fashion Design as a career should be able to sketch and communicate
ideas; to develop patterns and stitch garments; and to be creative in their vision. We know that girls
who are considering this class will not be experts in these fields; we work closely with the students
to develop their unique talents. In sketching, students learn how to develop and present their ideas
on paper through drawing basic figures, drafting poses, and describing textures and details. In
stitching, students learn the basic stitches used to piece together a garment and add simple
details. Students also leave the program with a toolkit of ideas for inspiring and directing their
creativity.

A portfolio is required for application to any fashion design or arts school. At Spotlight, we talk
candidly with the students about how to develop a unique portfolio. Some students may have a
portfolio, which we work to improve. Other students may create their first portfolio during their
session at Spotlight. Students are encouraged to bring their existing portfolio or any fashion ideas
to further develop during the course.

Our classroom experience is supplemented by field trips, where girls can look at the latest
fashions in stores, on shelves, and in hand. Girls leave the program with the ability and courage to
explore their unique design concepts as well as a sound understanding of the design process in
general, one that will help them in an array of creative pursuits.
